What is your favourite book and why?
My favourite book as a child was Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. It is the first book I remember wanting to read again. I still to this day read it thinking that Wilbur and Charlotte will be together forever. I then start to cry when they can not.
I also really liked Please Mrs Butler by Allan Alhberg. I’m not sure if we needed to know the poem the book is named after off by heart for a class performance, but I remember being able to say it perfectly in sync with my friend. We were constantly performing it in the playground. Years on when I got my first teaching job another friend of mine gave me a copy of the book and wrote in it “every good teacher needs a copy of this.” I’m guessing she could recite the poem off by heart too.
What is your favourite memory from school?
My favourite memory from school is doing topic work. We would make a book for each topic which would usually have a hessian binding down the side. We were allowed to mount and trim all our own work (a useful skill if you go on to become a teacher.) My favourite topics were the Tudors, which is still my favourite time period to read and learn about. I also enjoyed a topic we did on Seals which has remained my favourite animal. These topics were taught by my favourite teachers and were subjects they were passionate about. It shows how we can pass on our love of learning and how memories we make together can last.
What is your most inspirational quote?
“My teacher thought I was smarter than I was - so I was.” It reminds me that I’m right to be ambitious for what the children in my class can achieve. It also is exactly what we are saying in the Ditton Lodge high five. “Aim high and achieve.”

What is your favourite book and why?
As a child, I enjoyed reading Roald Dahl’s books. I loved his character descriptions and how he brought them to life. If I had to choose my favourite book, it would be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Journeying with Charlie from his humble home into the magical world of Willy Wonka’s factory was a delight. The wonders inside the factory were mesmerising, while the children who join the factory tour were a great source of amusement. I have enjoyed reading the Roald Dahl books again with my own children. We were fortunate at Christmas to go and see spectacular giant lanterns of all Roald Dahl’s books and characters, which felt like we were stepping inside the books.
What is your favourite memory from school?
I have always loved learning and have many happy memories from my school years. My most vivid memories are the residential school trips I went on in Primary and Secondary school. My first residential trip was staying in huts in Hainault forest in Year 6. It was such a great adventure. We spent our days outside exploring, doing activities in the forest and walking to nearby villages to sketch the quaint cottages. We wrote a diary of our trip when we returned to school and I was very proud when I won the best diary. The children in Years 4 and 6 will go on residentials and it really is a wonderful opportunity for them, with memories to last a lifetime.

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go - Dr Seuss
